Cheerleading: Should It Be Considered a Sport or Not?
People say cheerleading shouldn’t be a sport because it’s only teenage girls standing there yelling “go team” over and over again. There’s more to it though. You need to remember cheers, you have to look a certain way, and you have to be cheerful or at least act cheerful. Some people say “cheerleading is not a sport it does not have basket balls or footballs or anything like that” but you still compete. In Kansas only competitive cheer is considered a sport, so the cheerleaders who cheer for schools don’t get the credit they deserve.
Believe it or not cheerleaders have to be strong, loud, and confident. When you’re shy and uncomfortable around big crowds you can’t be a cheerleader, because you need to stand tall, know your motions for cheers, speak loud, and look good while you’re cheering. If you have someone on your squad who’s messing up on the cheers and goofing around when they are not supposed to, then your whole team looks bad. Not only do the football players represent the school, but cheerleaders do too! So if your squad looks bad then your whole school looks bad. What would you think of a team of cheerleaders goofing around?
Also cheerleading has to do with strength. You can’t do stunts if you’re weak. Even if you’re a flyer you’re going to need strength to pull yourself up to the base’s hands. You’ll need to trust your squad so that if you’re a flyer when you’re up there you don’t get worried and start shaking, causing your bases to lose balance. If you fall down you could get seriously hurt and let down your team. In conclusion, you have a lot of responsibility when it comes to being a cheerleader and that’s why it should be called a sport. #cheerleading #schoolproblems
