Big things are happening in Riverton Kansas… at least to seven girls that is. Riverton is a small town in southeast Kansas with nothing more than a school and a stoplight. Not a whole lot happens around here. You spend your week going to school, then go to the high school game on Friday night. If you aren’t playing baseball or basketball on the weekend, then you are working cattle. Athletics was never top notch at Riverton either. Every couple years you would get a team that was pretty decent, but that’s about it.
I started playing volleyball in the seventh grade. It’s been a year, and my team has worked our tails off to get where we are now. We are undefeated. We won our school’s league tournament that hasn’t been won by Riverton in at least the last 40 years. We spent the last year putting every spare moment we had into volleyball. We came to weights over the summer, attended camps, went outside, and just played volleyball all the time. Look where it’s brought us. We have put blood, sweat, and tears into this season.
The only bad thing about winning is that when you win, everyone's ego gets bigger and bigger. Then you think you’re the best and lose. Our rival school, Baxter, is also undefeated in league, and we haven’t played Galena yet. If we can beat them, then we will win league! It will take focus, determination, and perseverance to win, but I believe we can do it! Even if we don't win, I think that our girl’s athletics will be making a turn around the right corner. I think with determination and the right mindset, we can go out and win a state championship next year in high school.
